Plan for Short Film

8/9/22

 Idea:

- One man defending his home from intruders.

- Protagonist and antagonists have guns and lethal items

- Villainous Protagonist

11/9/22

Inspiration:

- Home Alone

- Us

Both, Home Alone and my movie both revolve around a house invasion where someone on the inside has traps laid out for them.

Both, Us and my movie trick the audience into routing for the villain. This is done by flashbacks shown throughout the film, leaving key moments out until the end.

Plot:

Us - intruder scene

Both films feature low-key lighting to create suspense for the audience. I intend to also use low-key lighting throughout my film, featuring dark areas, making characters blend into the darkness like in the other two films. The films are all set in houses that are being raided. In Us, the house is being attacked by clones of the family that lives in the house, terrorizing the family

Man uses lethal force to defend his house from home invader.

Music:

Toccata and Fugue in D, BWV 565 - by Johann Sebastian Bach

Will only be included in the final few in the minutes of the film before showing the end credits. During this moment, Eric is seen walking down the pathway away from the camera

My idea for the protagonist:

The protagonist of my movie is a man named Eric. He is seen as a man who lives alone and isolated from most people. He is seen mostly doing his daily routine of house chores and getting himself ready. It isn't until the end of the film that Eric is the villain of the film, after seeing a flashback of him killing a man who was related the home invader. It is also revealed that he is a merciless hitman for hire. My intention was to the audience into thinking Eric just wanted a normal life, but lives a double life. I was inspired by many villain protagonists in movies. Examples can be seen from Alex from A Clockwork Orange and Michael from The Godfather.

I attended a summer course that specialised in film studies at a university in London. Together with my group, we made a short film. However, we almost go in trouble with the police, mistaking the prop blood for real blood, as we were shooting in public, most specifically, Buckingham Palace.

There have been many shows and films where homes are invaded and the intruder kills someone who is beloved to another character that was living in the house. An example can be seen from one of my favourite animes, 91 Days.

In this scene, the protagonist, Angelo, hides in a closet as he witnesses armed gunmen, who’s faces are unknown to him, hold his dad, brother, and mum at gunpoint. Results with them getting gun downed and only Angelo surviving, who then seeks revenge. My film goes through a similar revenge act.
The shot of Angelo in the closet is similar to a shot I plan to use in my film.

The use of voiceover is used a lot in multiple films. I plan to use voiceover throughout my films to sometimes tell the thoughts of the protagonist. I was inspired by films like, American Psycho, Fight Club, and Goodfellas.

I was inspired by a moment from the film Silence of the Lambs, when the protagonist was searching around the house, searching for the antagonist, who was stalking her the entire time, wearing night vision goggles. The use of dark lighting will also be used in movie, as it creates tension due to the use of no non-diegetic music. The way I plan to use this in my movie is by actually making it a POV from the protagonist’s perspective, as it leaves the audience question what will happen next, seeing that they can’t look behind him.

I also took inspiration of the beginning of the film, Halloween, where it is set in first person from the killer. In my movie, I plan to use this in my film, through the perspective of the protagonist.

I took inspiration from a moment from the film The Grand Budapest Hotel. One particular scene caught my I when a man was being stalked by an assassin. The assassin takes his shoes off as a way to hide his presence and to avoid making sounds from his shoes, making the man and the audience unsure of when he is going to strike. Just when the man seems fine, the assassin jumps him. In my film, I used the exact same technique that was happening in that sequence, as noise gives away the location of a person.
