Q&A with Charlie Budden

Final year film production student, Charlie Budden came to my school, Tanglin Trust School, to give a presentation of his movie, Oh Little Spark,  which he directed.  The film centers around a boy named Gabriel and his Grandma, showing the bond and relationship those two have. The film is also largely inspired by the relationship Charlie and his Grandma share, who too played in the movie. Gabriel's Grandma explains her wartime memories to Gabriel, creating a rift in their relationship as tragic secrets are revealed.  Charlie chose to create this movie as it shows the increasing disconnect between generations in modern society and the enduring familial relationship between a grandma and her grandson. Charlie wanted to establish an authentic and emotional resonance with the audience through its personal story. This is due to the fact that Charlie has an elderly Grandma, and the relationship they share is similar to the one that is presented in the film. Charlie's aim was to give

Skyfall analysis

In Skyfall, the house, Skyfall, is under assault by armed gunmen and the defenders are fighting back with all they've got. In my movie, there will be only one man invading the house of the protagonist. The use of guns will represent the action as guns are very commonly used in shootout scenes, which is something I am trying to recreate. The low-key lighting represent the horror and suspense, which is also something I intend to use in the making of my film, as the characters tend to blend in with the darkness more at night. The middle of the film will be set at night as it is the time of day when bad events tend to occur. The only difference is that Skyfall contained very dramatic non-diegetic action music, whilst my movie won’t be containing any. This is to build the suspense and fear. The house is also set on fire by the intruders, making escape impossible. This would’ve been a good feature to add to my film, but it would’ve require too much work with editing or even using real fi

Updated schedule

Weather problems

Image
My shooting schedule has been hit recently due to Singapore's rainy season lasting longer than expected. The plan to shoot the exterior Scene 3 has been hit due to the thundery conditions. This is problematic as I need my cast member to be in attendance as well. The original plan of 19 of January has had to be changed. The plan has shifted to the 22 January due to his availability and the camera has been booked.

Schedule

The plan is to get the filming done in 3 evenings during the week and aim to do most of the post-production before the end of January. The time schedule is optimistic but possible as I'm working mostly alone and only need cast members for about 30% of the shooting.

Location Scouting

Image
See above to location scouting reports for all 3 locations. SCENE 1 Location - Flashback The photos above are from FS2. While the location has its advantages as it has empty dark space, the cyclorama and the light panels, it's clearly a classroom. While the desk can be moved the presence of the whiteboard is problematic and can only be disguised with careful blocking. FS2 has been booked for the shooting session and the actors have been informed. SCENE 3 location Exterior This is the location for the denouement of my film. The road is accessible and relatively quiet however, there is currently construction taking place and there can be a steady flow of traffic. The main issue is the heat, but there is a domestic residence nearby for refreshment and shelter.
